When the magma cooled and hardened it became this dark, domed plug which you can see on the right hand side of this photograph. It has a diameter of roughly 350m, noticeably higher than the land around it. Sheep Island and then Rathlin Island can be seen in the distance.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Fair Head (or Benmore) is perhaps the finest cliff in Northern Ireland. Its 100m vertical face of perfect dolerite is a distinctive feature of the skyline when looking eastwards from Ballycastle. Near the summit of the cliff are two small loughs. The one in my photograph here is known as Lough Dhu (The Black Lough). A legend tells how a ghostly devil-horse lives under the waters and takes the human form of a grey man when a mist rolls in from the sea. According to another story, Fairhead ws named from the tale of a beautiful fair-headed girl who once lived in a castle on Rathlin Island. A battle between two suitors led to one of them being mortally wounded. As he lay dying, he whispered to his servant to dance with the girl on the cliffs below the castle. The pair danced on the clifftop and before falling over it to their deaths. The body of the fair-headed maiden is said to have washed up on the mainland and this headland is now known as Fair Head.</image:caption>

The bay features two beautiful strands which join together when the tide goes out. <image:caption>Lacada Point is a cruel talon of rock which juts out into the sea off the Giant's Causeway headlands. Access to the point is hazardous since the closure of the old lower cliff path in 1994. On a cold, stormy night in 1588, it was here that nearly 1300 men of the Spanish Warship, The Girona, lost their lives in the dark freezing waters. Only 5 men survived. The wreck site is on the right of this photograph. In 1967 a team of Belgian divers led by Robert Stenuit found the wreck and brought up much of the treasure which is now on display at the Ulster Museum.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Poisoned Glen sits at the head of Dunlewey Lough in the Gweedore district of County Donegal. Its name is suspected to originate from an incorrect translation from the Irish name. This photograph was taken on a late summer evening, moments before the sun dropped below a distant hill. The glen is quite boggy in places and can be plagued by midges in late summer. However, a walk up the glen gives some spectacular views of the impressive cliffs at the back of the glen. If you are lucky, you might even catch sight of Golden Eagles which were recently reintroduced to nearby Glenveagh.</image:caption>

It is a fine example of a medieval castle ruin and is one of the finest in Northern Ireland. The castle was built by Richard de Burgh, Earl of Ulster, in the 1200s. The castle later became the home of the MacQuillin clan in 1513 and then later to the MacDonnell clan. It is now owned by the Environment and Heritage Service.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Murlough Bay is perhaps Northern Ireland's most beautiful and peaceful bay. It is accessed by a steep road from the top of Fair Head which winds down the cliffs. The bay is backed by natural woodland and steep cliffs which are home to peregrine falcons and other birds of prey. Coal mining once took place here and there are several old ruins which were once the miners cottages. From Murlough Bay, spectacular views are on offer across to Fairhead, Rathlin Island and to the islands of Scotland. This photo was taken from high up on the east side of Murlough Bay looking back to Fair Head and Rathlin.</image:caption>
